Expanding the Home Product Line
There has been a lot of reporting in recent months about Apple’s efforts to expand its footprint in customers' homes with in-development products like a wall-mounted smart home hub. According to a new report from Bloomberg, this strategy could also include a smart doorbell.
FaceID Technology and Door Unlocking
The smart doorbell is expected to utilize Apple’s FaceID technology to scan faces as individuals approach the door. It would then connect wirelessly to a deadbolt lock, automatically unlocking for the residents of the home. This feature aims to enhance both security and convenience for users.
Development Stages and Potential Challenges
The report indicates that the smart doorbell is in the early stages of development and is unlikely to hit the market before the end of 2025 at the earliest. It may work with third-party locks compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, or Apple might launch it in partnership with a specific lock manufacturer. Bloomberg notes that while a smart doorbell featuring FaceID would enable Apple to compete with products like Amazon Ring, it could also expose the brand to new risks, particularly if the system were blamed for home break-ins.
