This launch created a frenzy online. The company had to temporarily suspend new account creation due to massive traffic.

Sora uses text instructions to produce content. It is similar to other content creation programs like ChatGPT. However, unlike traditional AI programs that generate written responses, Sora creates high-quality videos based on user input.

According to OpenAI's statement with the December 9 launch, Sora Turbo improves the original program. It allows for faster video creation, better quality, and many video editing features. Users can cut and create sequences while modifying parts of a video.

How Does Sora Turbo Work?

The power of Sora and other AI video generators lies in their ability to replicate what humans can do with high-quality filmmaking equipment, but in a very short time.

Users can give instructions on what to include in the video. They can specify the type of camera, lens choices, lighting, visual style, composition, and script.

For example, a user might say:

“Use a medium telephoto lens (85mm) to capture an intimate portrait of a street vendor working at night. Illuminate the scene with warm lights from the vendor's stand and cooler urban lights in the background. Focus on the vendor's hands preparing food or items, balancing the frame with her expressive face. The image should convey hard work and pride in her craft.”

Is Sora the Only AI Video Generator?

No, it is not. The market for AI video generators is growing every day. One key difference between Sora and its competitors is the quality and realism of the videos produced by Sora.
Moreover, the new version, Sora Turbo, offers advanced video editing features similar to those found in Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. These are popular editing software used in film, television, and online content creation.
Additionally, Sora has financial backing from the software giant Microsoft. To date, Microsoft has invested nearly $14 billion, including $10 billion in the latest funding round on January 23. According to CNBC in October, OpenAI now has a credit line of $4 billion, bringing its total liquidity to over $10 billion. This level of investment gives Sora an advantage that many competitors do not have.

Lights, Camera, Sora: Hollywood's New Competition

Some industry experts and creative directors express concerns about the potential disruption Sora may bring to the film industry, especially in Hollywood.
In March, a Hollywood executive, speaking to Al Jazeera on the condition of anonymity, stated: “I don’t see it as a threat to production so much as a threat to the way production is done as we currently know it.”
He referenced past changes in post-production practices, noting the shift to video editing on personal laptops instead of relying on post-production companies.
“Lots of people got wiped out in that transition while others could suddenly afford a proper editor without the overhead a post house demands,” he explained.
