Lighter, more comfortable, and likely more affordable: Samsung has announced its mixed reality headset, Project Moohan. This collaboration with Google could significantly disrupt the mixed reality market.
December 2024: Samsung Unveils Its Mixed Reality Headset, Project Moohan
In collaboration with Google, Samsung has launched its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, Project Moohan, which means "infinity" in Korean. This announcement marks the official entry of the South Korean giant into the high-end XR headset market, directly responding to the Apple Vision Pro.
A Comfort-Optimized Design
The Project Moohan features a lightweight design with an optimized weight distribution. It includes a wide cushion at the back and an adjustable plastic piece around the head, contrasting with the criticisms regarding the weight of Apple's Vision Pro.
Advanced Technical Features
Powered by the Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2 chip, specifically designed for mixed reality, Project Moohan offers enhanced performance compared to the SoC in the Meta Quest 3. It boasts high-resolution displays and a wider field of view than the Vision Pro. An interchangeable external battery connects via USB-C, allowing users to adjust battery life according to their needs. The headset can also be used with or without a light-sealing gasket.
Easy to use interface
Running on Android XR, Project Moohan provides an interface inspired by visionOS but enriched with unique features. Users can easily switch between virtual and augmented reality with a simple double tap on the side. The system supports multitasking with multiple windows, creating a true virtual workspace. Existing Android applications are compatible, and the headset integrates Google services such as Maps, YouTube, Google TV, and Chrome.
Samsung and Google are focusing on YouTube as the primary source of immersive content, particularly leveraging its stereoscopic videos. A unique feature allows for the automatic conversion of standard videos into 3D memories, potentially offering a more advanced experience than that of the Vision Pro.
